Everyone is familiar with our five sensory factors: Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch. In fact almost all people are programmed to live exclusively in response to their sensory input. So much so that it becomes a feedback loop that they can’t break out of. Their outside circumstances, as relayed by the senses, become the habits that they are doomed to repeat. But you will never achieve anything of consequence by this “outside-in” way of living.
The good news is that we are also all equally equipped with mental faculties that we can tap into in order to change ourselves and our environment. These mental faculties are:
These are like a mental toolbox that we can draw on to achieve big goals and live the life we want. But we must focus on and develop these faculties deliberately in order to use them fully. If we make the effort to work on them we can realize tremendous benefits.
Let’s look at each one a little more closely.
No one has a bad memory. That’s like saying we have a bad bicep muscle. An individual’s memory may be weak but it can be strengthened. If we gain a better understanding of how memory functions we can take steps to improve it.
This is the heart of our ability to think which is the highest function of which humans are capable. People commonly use reason to create negative, self-defeating thoughts. But we have the power to take control of our thinking and build positive thoughts. We can refuse to let negative input affect our thinking and maintain control no matter what conditions we are in.
The point of view from which we look at a situation is our perspective. We have to understand that everything has an opposite - back/front, left/right, valuable/worthless, good/bad. The fact is there are many ways to look at any one thing. If we take control of our perspective we can increase the number of options and actions we have to choose from.
This is a marvelous power once you realize that everything we see in the world was first a creation in someone’s imagination. The first step in the process of creating anything is using our imagination to create a fantasy. It’s only a fantasy because it hasn’t yet gone through the other steps necessary to manifest into physical reality. We have the ability to use this power constructively to shape our own lives.
Engaging in single-minded focus is the function of the Will. It is the ability to hold one picture in our mind to the exclusion of all outside distractions. This mental faculty is resident in all of us although not everyone has developed it equally. Just as we can strengthen muscles through physical training we all can strengthen the Will through practice. When we learn to concentrate on one thing, we can learn to concentrate on anything.
All people have an innate ability to receive and translate vibrations from those with whom we interact. This is sometimes called a ‘sixth sense’ but it is technically not a sense but a mental faculty. Therefore it can be developed and improved if we choose to work on it.
Our mind is an incredible gift. Once you understand it’s immense capabilities you can begin to use it to it’s full creative potential.
